Brass Camp

In 2006, Dr. Judson Scott and I started the Puget Sound Brass Camp with the University of Puget Sound (Community Music) and Metro Parks Tacoma.  We spent a week working with several talented young brass players. The event was a great success, prompting us to launch the Bellevue Brass Camp in 2007 and the Seattle Brass Camp this summer.  For the most up to date information about these camps and links, click HERE.

At our brass camps, Dr. Scott and I teach students who are usually between the ages of 13-18 who play trumpet, trombone, euphonium (“baritone horn”), “French horn,” bass trombone, and tuba. We generally conduct group breathing classes to start our day, followed by “like instrument” warm-up sessions.  We take a lunch break and return to brass ensemble and “sectional” rehearsals.  We play a wide variety of music and like to include at least one selection in a Jazz style.  At the end of the week, we give a culminating performance.

CongratulationsA trumpet trio from Puget Sound Brass Camp 2007 won the Commencement Bay Solo and Ensemble Competition and will compete at state! Neal Hulbert, Oscar Thorpe and Kristen Monk learned the Tomasi Trio for Trumpets at PSBC (while working with Dr. Scott), received the top rating and advanced to the state competition. Nice work!
